Pembrey 14th/15th May
Friday
So this was going to be the first meeting of the year but leading up to it I was mostly on Holiday and visiting emigrating cheese’s (they all seem to be leaving the country). So Sunday night and 4 days till the test day. I need to do a Fork seal brake pads and clean callipers fit new clip-ons and controls wash and check everything lock wire and goooooooo. So that took Sunday night, Monday night and Wednesday night load the trailer Thursday get up at 5 am Friday and we are off.
We arrive bright eyed at 8.30 to the circuit (well we arrive) and get a nice spot on the concrete; I wasn’t able to hook in to the circuit generators as all outlets were takenL. So quickly unload and check the bike before signing on. I remember helping putting the awning up but magically it all gets sorted by the time I come back in from the first session which was nice. (ok ok credit to Helen for organising us all weekend lol).
So the first session is the first time on the bike for a while, we have also changed the fork oil viscosity, the clip-ons and gone to a two finger brake/clutch lever setup. I come in after 15 mins and check it over, all good. Forks feel fine and it turns better with the longer clip-ons. That and drink tea J
At this point I realise its 30 mins sessions:-0, oh well it’s a nice way to fully wake up if only every morning was like it. Quick check of the bike and all is good; we get on setting everything up and catching up with a few people.
<tea>
The morning is much getting into the swing of things , everything on the bike feels fast and rushed I slow the pace down a little to try and get things right then built on that (my excuse and sticking to it). Unlike last year I have changed my line after spitfires and I think its working. Heading to spitfires I short shift into third take the corner and accelerate not trying to get to the right of the circuit for the left and just turn leftJ. I can carry forth then till the old hairpin which is nice and makes the ride less frantic.
<tea>
So lunch and the afternoon sessions, it starts to rain so the kettle gets stuck on, looks like just a shower and not worth changing wheels (yet). By the time I drink the tea and look out its dry. Helmet on and out we go (with 15 mins still left).
The rest of the afternoon it’s out for 15 come in check times quick drink and out for 10 more awesome track time J. So day over and happy, times down and constant and matching the personal best at Pembrey. If the weather holds it’s on J
<tea>
A quick spell at scruiteneering we get through a lot of the bikes ready for tomorrow, Alan Bond checks mine and after a few tuts and looking impressed at the new clip-ons and levers we get the nod. Signed on with a ticket for practise 5 and relax

In good cheese traditions Garf arrives gone 10pm and after several pints, ok I hear you …… Garf you say ? Well Garf is the new Cheese currently on his probation until we get the nod from all the old cheese lol. He’s a mate that’s been doing trackdays for a couple of years and eager to impress girls , thought he would try racing.
<beer>
Armed with a handful of excuses for being late he sets up his tent in the dark and prepares for tomorrows fun.

Sleeping tonight is in the back of the trailer, I can’t get comfy and am never going to sleep and ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Saturday
Morning has broken like the first morning, throw summet at the church choir and stick my head out the trailer. After all the talk about the weather I look up and think ….. Sweeeet it’s sunny. Bit more scruiting and recheck the bike all good to go.
Nerves, not really as yesterday was on the bike and its more of the same (with more aggression), practise I get to the holding area with seconds before the gate opens and hit the track ‘on it’ (well as on it as I ever get) . 10 mins practise and a fraction of a second slower than the best time yesterday, more we need more lol.
Back in and Analyse my laps times, analyse you say? Well yeah I got this GPS logger think and some software. It’s awesome, logs your lines you can see where you get on the gas and brakes .. the speed through the corners and all that jazz. That and I look cool plugging the lap top into the bike J
Race 1
First race and I’m gagging to get out there, it’s been too long, the sun is shining tyres are hot as I get on the grid. Flagged off for the warm up I practise the race start and it’s good. Well I can hold my own but find I can make up places before hatchets a plan emerges.
Lights on ……. Lights off man that was quick and catches me a little unprepared, still right hand side of the track and push my way through and we are racing. From 4th from the back I make 5 places after the first lap. Gary (98) comes past (as normal ) he normally finishes just up from me and has to bea target …. Anyway I finish where I started and lost most of what I made up.
Finish and buzzing I love racing nothing comes close:
Race 2
So after a long wait (delays and stuff) I get out in the 600 race, there’s another SV but the rest are 600’s so I am down 40 – 50 bhp :-0. This will be hard but at least its track time.
After the first lap there are 8 bikes behind me (all 600’s) , I keep most at bay till the 5th lap but finish and not last. Times are down and consistent, great battles big grinsJ . I chat with a rider I have been dicing with all race and we are both buzzing on adrenaline……. God knows what people watching thought lol.
Race 3
The Minitwin race is 2 after the 600 race, so a quick splash of petrol drink and we are back out.
Adrenaline already flowing we go from having 5 behind to 10 behind at the end of the first lap, Gary takes me on the second lap (again), awesome racing again and some fantastic battles with both the GP45 boys and the Minitwins. I lose some of what I made up in the start but again times constant with a personal best in lap 2.
Race 4
So the 600 final, get my usual start and entering hatchet’s there’s smoke and bikes everywhere, this slows everyone down and I get through on the curbs. I nail it and think don’t red flag don’t red flag ……. And they red flag ‘doh’
Now here’s the downer after a race start I always loose adrenaline and do really really badly. They clear the crash and after 10 mins or so we restart. My times drop by 4 seconds a lap , what the hell is that about… tiered ? Something changed ? Looming weather playing on my mind ?? aghhhh rubbish I tells ya … but finish J
Saturday night and there’s the auction for DebRA and Mason (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=195120061677) Helen is helping out Maz and I bid and win a generator service, just in time as mines playing up and I snapped the pull cord that morning. Anyway being the intelligent chap I am I booked a travel lodge months ago, that makes it cheap you see so off I went to a warm bed and shower.
Sunday
Waking in a bed is just bliss after the night in the trailer, so fresh and wide awake and ready to go. We get to the circuit as practise is still out get the kettle on and change the rear tyre (was shagged) for a not so shagged part worn (cheap skate).
Into the leathers and lid and race face on.
Race 1
Much like Saturday my starts go well and the end of lap one I have ten bikes behind me but the clutch has started to slip slightly, not enough to slow me greatly but annoying. I am close to by best time and having some amazing battles. Gary (98) keeps passing me coming past the start finish but I get him on the brakes every time. Good on the brakes there but obviously coming out of Honda too slow L.
He finally gets me on lap 6 but in my mind that’s an improvementJ. Finish and back to the paddock from more tea.
Race 2
Warm up lap and the clutch is really slipping bad, I do the race start and pull in after 1 lap, won’t have time to sort it before the minitwin race and want to finish that. In the paddock loosen the cable and make sure there free play in it, don’t have time to change it though as I’m out in a couple of races.
Race 3
Unlike the rest of the weekend I do a very easy race start, after the 1st lap im second to last, I take a novice. I was going to come in but continued. I was taken the circuit a gear down the whole way to get drive, towards the end I take the essess in 4th as normal and find I have to go down to third to get drive before I brake for the old hairpin , gawd knows what the Marshalls thought. As for the straight before the kink, it felt I could push it quicker lol. Still I bring her home not last and tbh with times lower those on Friday testing J
Race 4
Didn’t go out, clutch is shagged
Early finish but a successful weekend J, TBH I really should have changed the clutch at the first hint of slippage, it don’t take long. But all in all an awesome weekend, but the older I get the longer it takes to recover lol.
